Types of Quilts
| |
The intricate patterns and colors designed into each quilt makes them a valuable
family heirloom and one of the most prized pieces in any bedroom setting.
Although they are made to be a piece of bedding that keeps you warm at night,
quilts have been used for many other purposes as they are quite literally works of art.
They are composed of multiple layers sewn together with a technique aptly named
quilting, and they can have many different designs comprised of many different patches of fabrics,
creating a wonderful decorative effect.

Not only can the different layers of fabric be sewn together, but for more homemade hand
prepared designs, the layers can be tied together at different intervals that will hold the quilt together during
washing and regular use. The ties can be made using yarn, ribbon or thread adding to the interesting pattern that
the quilt already possess.
More commonly, quilts are used as a bed cover as they are quite warm and comfortable
for use, they can also just be used to cover the bed when not in use just to add a decorative effect to the
room.
Because of the bold designs sewn into every quilt, they can have quite an impact on room
aesthetics and appeal. They even can be made as a large California King size quilt.
One other use quilts are known for is as curtains or wall hangings. They are created to use as a
wall decor piece, especially if they are thinner than normal and are a collector’s piece. Quilts that have been in
a family for years are sometimes patched and hung to serve as a memorabilia and family heirloom.
Designs of quilts can include fantastic scenery of some other intricate motif that makes them
suitable for decoration purposes. As a curtain, they can provide a substantial barrier against light and unwanted
eyes while serving a more visually appealing purpose.
Tablecloths are also a great way to utilize an old or new quilt; thinner or basic quilts can
create a nice tablecloth that not only keeps your table clean but can also add a theme to a dinner affair. If you
have an old tattered quilt, you don’t have to throw it away, but you can turn it into fashionable pillowcases or
throw cushions, reusing the pattern and fabric to add matching cushions or pillows to a bedroom or living room
setting.
Other uses for quilts include table mats, tote bags, picnic rugs, teddy bears, oven mitts, book
covers and wall art. These added uses are just pieces of a quilt that are still in great condition that is sewn
together to make other useful items.

There is no set fabric type to use in quilt making but can include synthetic materials, wool and
silk, but mostly quilts are made from cotton or cotton blends. Quilts can even be made from old clothes and
fabrics.
So if you have old items such as baby clothes or clothes worn by a loved one, you can have them
made into a quilt so they remain with you forever.
Quilts are washed and dried in the same manner as any other piece of bedding by putting them in
the dry and either sun drying or in the dryer.
Buying quilts is also an option and when purchasing a quilt look for quality, comfort and the
right size for your specific purpose.
Quilts last for years and are generally purchased as a family heirloom and there are many
different makers whose quality is regarded as some of the best and can cost a bit of money. You can also have you
own quilt made to suit your needs and will have more of a personal touch with a nostalgic effect.
